Harris, Ross Win Big 12 Weekly Awards
The special teams appear to be improving, much to our delight, highlighted this week by Aaron Ross’s winning the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week for his punt return touchdown. He wasn’t alone on the award list, as linebacker Aaron Harris won the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. Harris is not quite as good as Derrick Johnson, but he’s very talented.
The special teams, as a whole, improved this week. Save one failed extra point try (par for the course), Texas looked good on special teams. The punting unit continues to play well, and the kickoff coverage had a good game. This is a good sign, as Texas best chance at being upset this year will come if Texas gives away points on special teams. A punt return or kickoff for a touchdown are precisely the kinds of plays that could allow a team like, say, Oklahoma, to make things interesting.
