Gameday Report Card
Rushing
47 rushes, 373 yards. Talk about a mismatch. Nothing not to like here, as Henry Melton was solid, Vince Young made his nice runs, and Jamaal Charles was absolutely brilliant. Forget the fact that Rice is just totally outmatched. Charles still looked great. He has a nose for the hole, he’s patient enough to let it develop, and he has the speed to break the long one. If he’s not the starter from here on out, Mack Brown should be drug tested.
Grade: A+
Passing
There was no need to attempt a single pass, and on those plays where we did, it felt contrived. Young wasn’t great on Saturday night, probably in part because he didn’t need to be. I’m not going to lose any sleep over his mediocre passing night.
Grade: C
Receiving
See above. There just wasn’t much happening. David Thomas returned to form, which is to be expected. It’s hard to say much about the passing game in this one at all.
Grade: B
Defense
Rice’s first half possessions: Punt, Punt, Punt, Downs, Fumble, Punt, Fumble, Punt. Rice offense: 0 points. Texas defense: 14. In other words, even had we said, “Hey, Rice, we’ll let you have the ball every single time and we won’t play offense,” we still would have won. It was tough for Rice to do anything at all against our starters after they made adjustments to the option and contained the outside pitch man.

Coaching
We won big, we weren’t lacking focus, and we seemed pretty well prepared for this rollover game. It’s just so tough to evaluate such a huge mismatch, but there’s not much to complain about.

Overall
Sometimes, holding serve is all you need. Up 42-0 at half, we let the starters play one more set of downs in the second, then turned it over to the backups. By the way, the spread on the game was 41 points. Those oddsmakers sure know what they’re doing.
